Our Teachers
Wendy Samek
I was introduced to yoga at a young age by my father who had been influenced by his mother, who lived in India during the time of the British Raj. My childhood grounding and belief system was strongly tested in my early 20’s, when holidaying in Acapulco I became very ill with a bacterial infection. During the long recovery of 3 months in hospitals in Mexico, the US and Canada, I made a vow to myself that I would take great care of my health and endeavor for the rest of my life to practice the yogic principles taught to me by my father.
I made the time when I was a mother of 5 young children to meditate, which helped enormously to give me stability to balance the daily chaos of family life. I practiced yoga asanas, sometimes very briefly, but which gave me stamina and mental endurance. I studied the ancient yoga texts, ayurveda, health and nutrition, anatomy and eastern philosophy. I had grown up in outback Western Australia and in contrast, the lovely home and orchard in the lush Adelaide hills where I lived when my children were young, was an ideal environment to explore organic gardening and permaculture and a myriad of other new age revelations . But yoga was always my compass to lead me on and my passion. I sought out teachers and yoga classes and was inspired and influenced by each one in some way or another.
I have been fortunate that my path has crossed with many wonderful International teachers, some of whom are Swami Venkatesananda, Salvarajan Yesudian, Elizabeth Haich, Penny Neild-Smith, Martin Jackson, BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar, Mukunda Stiles.
In the early 70’s I was part of a small group who had the vision and put in the hard work to build an ashram for our revered teacher Swami Venkatesananda, to be able to come and live-in and be our resident teacher for 6 month periods at a time. The Beacon Ashram in South Fremantle, WA is still a thriving centre for spiritual teachings and yoga and organic gardening.
I am accredited to teach yoga with a few national yoga associations, namely IYTA and Yoga Australia. My beloved teacher for half my life time, BKS Iyengar granted me the great honour and priviledge to teach under his name whilst living in Jakarta in the late 90’s and separated from a yoga community. I have taught in halls, homes and community centres, nursing homes and parks and for a short time a women’s gaol. When Sue Kent and I opened the Kensington School of Yoga at the beginning of the 90’s it was one of the first schools of yoga in Adelaide fitted out with Iyengar inspired props and running classes 6 days a week.
To never stop learning and practicing the art of yoga is my life’s path.
To share by teaching yoga to a wide range of the community is my deep desire.

My love of yoga commenced in 2000 when I was pregnant and attending prenatal yoga with my teacher Wendy Samek. Before this I spent years of working in a corporate world along with living an unhealthy lifestyle that left me feeling stressed, depressed and depleted. Over time yoga gave me strength, more peace and a love of life and continues to do so. It has taught me to work towards a state of balance in every aspect of our busy lives. This encouraged me to share the benefits of yoga. In 2008 I began teaching and continue to study and practice with Wendy Samek at Om Yoga, greatly influenced by the teachings of BKS Iyengar and his family. My classes encompass the benefits of healthy alignment, breathing and mindfulness intertwined with yoga philosophy. I am a qualified teacher with Yoga Australia.

I have been practicing different styles of martial arts since 1980 and achieved a second dan black belt. This led me to Yoga to improve my flexibility and focus in 1999. Since that time I have concentrated on Yoga and completed an extended teacher training course at The Centre OM under Wendy Samek based on the Iyengar teachings. Initially training for my own development, I now love to share my love of Yoga to others. I have been teaching the Sunrise class on Thursday mornings for several years. I believe that Yoga is for everybody and take that philosophy into my teaching giving options to help people feel the benefits of their postures. This I think is a metaphor for life and helps bring the Yoga into yoga asana. I look forward to seeing you on the mat.

My commitment to yoga began in the early 1980s when I went along with some friends to a class at the Australian School of Yoga in Sydney. After only a short time I noticed that not only was my body changing, but I was also more grounded and less inclined to feel alienated and alone. Since that time my yoga practice has been a fundamental part of my life. I did my first teacher training in 1985 with Martyn Jackson, one of the pioneers of Iyengar yoga in Australia. However, I did not teach for many years. In 2004 I completed a Masters Degree in Social Work and worked for several years in the non-government sector with disadvantaged youth. I wanted to share the benefits of yoga with the young people I was working with and so I commenced teacher training with Wendy in 2011. I am now a registered teacher with Yoga Australia and I teach on the Saturday morning roster at Om Yoga. I also work in private practice as a counsellor and psychotherapist. My intention is to provide an integrated approach to healing and well-being in which the wisdom of yoga informs evidence based psychology and provides the inner strength to deal with the external challenges that life presents us with.

Kate has always had an interest in health and well being and felt a deep connection with yoga from her very first class, in awe at the lightness of body and mind she felt after classes. With a background in the arts, she began her teacher training with Wendy Samek in 2012 to deepen her practice and gain more knowledge on her lifelong yoga journey. Kate has a special interest in yoga for young people and yoga for women’s health after recognising the important role yoga played in her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter. She loves cooking and reading and lives with her husband Tom, daughter Frankie and two spoilt cats.
